ಇದು ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಯುಗ. ಎಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದರೂ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ-ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರಗಳು, ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಉಪಕರಣಗಳು, ಎಲ್ಲದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ. ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಒಂದು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೆಂಬ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ಒಂದೇ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ-ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಗಳು ಇಂದು ಸಾವಿನ ರಹಸ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಬೇಧಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಪುಗಾಲಿಟ್ಟಿವೆ. ಅಷ್ಟರಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ-ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಆವರಿಸಿವೆ ಆದರೆ...??? ಆದರೆ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮನಾಗಿ ಜನರ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳು ಬದಲಾಗಿವೆಯೇ? ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನ ಅವರ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಂಚುತ್ತಿದೆಯೇ?, ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಂಡ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಾರ್ಕಿಕವಾಗಿ ಚಿಂತಿಸುವ ಮನೋಭಾವ ರೂಡಿಯಾಗಿದೆಯೇ? ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಮೌನ. ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಇದು ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಜಗತ್ತು ಈ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದೇಕೆ ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಮಾತ್ರ ತಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯಗೆ ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನಾ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿವೆ. ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಮೌಢ್ಯ ತಂಬಿ ತುಳುಕುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಧರ್ಮ-ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳೇ ಇವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ವಿಜೃಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಮಾನವೀಯತೆಗಿಂತ ಜಾತಿ, ಕಂದಾಚಾರಗಳೇ ಮೇಲುಗೈ ಸಾಧಿಸಿವೆ. ದುರಾದೃಷ್ಟದ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆಂದರೆ ಸಮಾಜದ ಓರೆಕೋರೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೇರ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ, ಸಮಾಜದ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಬೇಕಾದ, ಜನರ ಹೃದಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯ ಹರಿಕಾರನಾಗಬೇಕಾದ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳೂ ಕೂಡ ಸಮಾಜದ ಯಥಾವತ್‌ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಗಳಂತೆ ವರ್ತಿಸುತ್ತ...

ಕುವೆಂಪು ಬರೆದ ’’ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಾಯಣ ದರ್ಶನಂ’’ ಕೃತಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಮೇರುಕೃತಿ, ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯ, ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಲಶಪ್ರಾಯವಾಗಿರುವ ಸಾರ್ವಕಾಲಿಕ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು. ಆದರೆ ಇಂಥದ್ದೊಂದು ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕೃತಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಹಿ ಸತ್ಯವೇ ಸರಿ. ಇಂಥ ಮೇರು ಕೃತಿಯ ಲಭ್ಯತೆ ಏಕಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಾಸಕ್ತರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ, ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲ ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ‘ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ’ವನ್ನು ತಂದುಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಎತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿದ ಒಂದು ಮಹಾನ್‌ ಕೃತಿ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದರೆ ಇದೆಂಥಾ ದುರ್ಗತಿ. ಇದು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ತಲೆ ತಗ್ಗಿಸುವಂಥ ವಿಚಾರ. ಕುವೆಂಪು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಮೇರು ಪುರುಷ. ಅವರ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ಆವಿರ್ಭವಿಸಿದ ಅನರ್ಘ್ಯ ಕಾವ್ಯವೊಂದು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗದಿರುವುದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಖೇದದ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಈ ಕೃತಿಯ ಮೂಲ ಹಕ್ಕು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಉದಯರವಿ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ, ಇದನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ಮುದ್ರಿಸಿತು. ಇದರ ನಂತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಾಧಿಕಾರ 2000ನೇ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅನುದಾನದಿಂದ 880 ಪುಟಗಳ ಈ ಬೃಹತ್‌ ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ 40 ರೂಗಳ ರಿಯಾಯಿತಿ ದರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿತು. ಕೆಲವೇ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮೇರುಕೃತಿ ಸಹೃದಯರ ಮನೆ ಸೇರಿತು. ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳು ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗದಾದವು. ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಇದು ಮರು ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಂಡಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು ಈ ಕೃತಿಗಾಗಿ ಸುತ್ತದೇ ...

ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಡೆವೊಲಪ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್‌ ಸೆಂಟರ್‌ (MSIDC) ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಲಿಪ್ಯಂತರ (ಒಂದು ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಭಾಷೆಯ ಲಿಪಿಗೆ ಪರಿವರ್ತಿಸುವುದು) ಮಾಡುವ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ವೇರ್‌ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಂಗ್ಷಿಷ್‌ ಕೀ ಬೋರ್ಡ್‌ನಿಂದಲೇ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲು ಈ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ವೇರ್‌ ಅವಕಾಶ ನೀಡಲಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ವೇರ್‌ನ ಬೀಟಾ ಆವೃತ್ತಿ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗಲಿದ್ದು, ಕನ್ನಡ, ತೆಲುಗು, ಹಿಂದಿ, ತಮಿಳು, ಬಂಗಾಳಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆಯಲಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಾಪ್ಟ್‌ವೇರ್‌ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮೈಕ್ರೋಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ರನ್‌ ಆಗುವ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅ‌ಪ್ಲಿಕೇಶನ್‌ಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಟೈಪ್‌ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ವಿಂಡೋಸ್‌ ಓಎಸ್‌ನ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಆವತ್ತಿ ವಿಂಡೋಸ್‌ 7 ಇತರೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುವ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಅಂತೂ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್‌ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಐಟಿ ದೈತ್ಯ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳಿಂದ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಮಹತ್ವ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಸಂತೋಷದ ವಿಚಾರ.

An artificial retina could restore sight to the blind, according to new research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The device can be plugged directly into the optic nerve and is based on widely used cochlear implants. The artificial retina is designed to help people with advanced macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa, progressive diseases that permanently blind patients, usually older patients. Some drugs can delay the process, but once the cells that detect light (rods) and color (cones) die, they are gone. The nerves behind the rods and cones do survive, however. For a patient to see again, something needs to stimulate the nerves. A mild electrical charge, applied using a self-contained, surgically implanted device could stimulate the optical nerves and allow a person to see again.

University and college teachers in Karnataka will get revised University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales. The retirement age for university teachers is raised from 60 to 62 years. The pay revision along the lines of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations will benefit an estimated 18,630 university and college teachers. The beneficiaries of the retirement age enhancement will, however, be much less. Announcing the Cabinet decisions, Home Minister V S Acharya said the revised pay scales for teachers would be implemented with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006. The hike for teachers will range between Rs 10,000 and Rs 35,000 per month depending on the seniority and the positions they hold. The Cabinet also met the long-pending demands of junior doctors, who had threatened to go on indefinite strike. Nearly 4,000 doctors are employed with the health department. The Cabinet approved allowances between Rs 4,000 and Rs 12,500 a month for the government doctors. The hike for doctor...

The Cabinet ratified the recommendations of the Sixth Central Pay Commission with minor modifications. The jump in pay is expected to be upwards of 30 per cent after taxes. The system of four Pay Bands with 20 Grade Pays recommended by the commission has been accepted. The median salary for central government employees in India currently stands at Rs 250,092 per annum, while that of private sector companies at Rs 408,605. It is expected that the figure for government employees will rise to Rs 352,611 — which would leave a small gap of Rs 50,000 compared to the private sector. However, as in the past, post pay commission most private sector companies revise their pay scales upwards which further increases this ever widening gap.
